During the Spanish colonial period, when speaking against oppression meant jail or death, one Filipino dared to write the truth that opened everyone’s eyes-- and that is José Rizal. When Filipinos were mistreated and controlled under Spanish colonial rule, many accepted injustice as a normal part of their life, believing that they could do nothing about it and that acceptance was the better choice. But because of Jose Rizal's courage, intelligence, and love for our country, he became an eye opener to filipinos. He showed the reality and painful truth of their situation. Through his words he made filipinos realize that they deserved dignity, equality, and freedom. Jose Rizal became the face of the Philippines because he gave Filipinos a sense of self worth and taught them to value themselves as a nation.

Jose Rizal’s novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, serves as Rizal's greatest weapon to show the abuses of the Spanish government and religious leaders. His writings revealed the cruelty, oppression, and mistreatment that filipinos experience. Because of Jose Rizal's books, Filipinos became aware-- aware of their sufferings and why the change was really needed. Instead of using violence to fight, he used his intellect and wrote the truth. He believed in peaceful ways to fight for the filipinos freedom-- to improve the country. He made Filipinos realize that the fight to true freedom starts with understanding the truth.

Until now his sacrifices inspired Filipinos to love and feel proud of their country. His execution showed that his way can be powerful enough to go against the Spaniards, because of this it sparked the Filipinos to fight for their freedom and to fight for the country. Jose Rizal showed that being a true hero is not just about fighting with weapons, but also about standing up for what is right, speaking the truth, and inspiring others with knowledge and courage. Jose Rizal remains a lasting symbol of bravery, knowledge, and hope for the Philippines.
