A Letter to the President: My Concern on Road Discipline and the Preservation of the Sierra Madre

Dear Mr. President Bongbong Marcos jr.,

My name is Athena Rane Reburon from Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur, and I am currently studying in Vigan City. As both a student and a concerned citizen, I am writing this with hope that you, sir will consider my observations and concerns about our community and country.

As a student studying in a different place who needs to travel to get to school, I usually observe vehicles that lack driving discipline, such as not using their signal lights, not lowering their headlights when necessary, motors and tricycles not staying in the shoulder lane, overtaking on yellow lines, and many more. I'm also aware and I've even seen that these often lead to accidents, road rage and traffic problems. I also believe that some outdated traffic laws need to be reviewed and updated to better address today’s road problems. I hope that with better law enforcement and updated laws, travelling would become much more safer for everyone.

Second sir, I'm also aware of the situation of the Sierra Madre now, and I would like to talk about it. It’s known as the shield that protects Luzon--us--from typhoons, especially from super typhoons. The least we could do is to protect and preserve the Sierra Madre in return. It has been standing for years, weakening typhoons and without it, we would face greater impact.

However, because of mining, Sierra Madre is now facing huge deforestation. The company responsible for it had said that they planted many trees for reforestation, but personally, sir, I think that despite this, it’s obvious that this still strips away the mountain that protects us. Reforestation takes years—or even decades—to restore what has been mined. And while we wait for those trees to grow, typhoons will always come as they do, because every year we will experience typhoons.

Mr. President I'm hoping that my letter will reach you and i hope that you can give attention to this before it's too late, because the Sierra Madre had protected us for so long, and now it's our turn to return the favor.

Sincerely,

Athena Rane Reburon
